Natural gas space heaters are intended for the purpose of warming up or heating up the large spaces and garages. They make use of natural gases which mainly comprise of methane, ethane, propane, butane. These natural gases are colorless, shapeless and odorless in their purest form. They are also known as hydrocarbons and thus comprise of hydrogen and carbon. The breaking of the bond between the hydrogen and carbon atom in these gases produce the enormous amount of energy in the form of heat. This is the concept of natural gas heaters, where we make use of the carbon hydrogen bond breaking energy.
Natural gas space heaters are very efficient and clean sources of heat. They are the most commonly used to heat up large sized areas. These heaters can warm the area sizing about 500 to 600 sq feet. This is approximately equal to two garages. The significant point to be noted is that they do not occupy too much of space. Thus they are more compact and easy to install and manage the heater. Since they are operated using natural gas, they are independent of electricity and hence they can function even in the absence of electricity. They are easy to install and most often they need ventilation in the form of chimney. When we think about the advantages, the most prominent thing that flashes our mind is that there is no need of electricity to operate a natural gas heater.
They do not require boilers to generate the heat. The heat required is generated from the natural gas itself which is highly rich in heat generating sources like carbon. Carbon is the most common source of heat and is abundantly available in these natural gases. On combustion of these gases, the carbon bonds undergo breaking, and this breaking up of bonds generate enormous amount of heat. This heat acts as the source of heat in the heater and thus we do not require a boiler here. There is continuous availability of fuel supply in this case. Thus it is very much efficient in heat production. Of course we have certain disadvantages associated with these heaters. Fossil fuels are produced as a by-product of the use of natural gases. Then, there is a probability of gas leakage which is very hazardous. Another disadvantage is they are not portable like few other heaters and they cannot be moved.
There are two types of natural gas heaters namely infra red heaters and forced air heaters. Infrared heaters are indirect method of heating up a region. We first heat or warm the various things and objects present in the region and the floor of the region. These in turn warm the air. Thus we mean them as indirect. They are costly when compared to the other type, which is forced air heaters. They have to be installed above the floor at a height of 7 feet and below the ceiling at the height of 4 inches. On the other hand, the forced air model uses a blue flame to heat up the region like we heat up a furnace using the air. This method takes much time in the heating process. Sawdust is often the by-product in such type of heating process. However, Natural gas space heaters can heat up a large space than an Infrared heater could do.
